Muay Thai translates in Thai, to Thai Boxing. It has military roots, dating back to 13th century, when the first Thai army soldiers were taught hand to hand combat called Muay Boran. It then evolved into Muay Thai as we know it today, incorporating the use of padded boxing gloves, introduction of time limited rounds and fights taking place within a ring. In these ways, it is similar to traditional boxing.

How does Muay Thai differ to other combat sports?

It’s often referred to as the "art of eight limbs," as it is characterised by 8 points of contact, two each of punches, elbows, kicks and knees. In contrast, other martial arts use less points of contact. It is the 8 point contact that makes it one of the most effective stand up striking martial arts.

What also makes it different to other forms of stand up combat sports is that it incorporates traditional elements such as the pre-fight dance ritual known as Wai Kru Ram Muay, the head dress (Mongkon) and the Sarama music that accompanies each fight.

Muay Thai Techniques:

  • Attack- Punches, elbow strikes, knee strikes, kicks, push kicks and clinches

  • Defence – Blocks, lean backs, deflections, leg catches and dodges.

  • Counter -The above attack and defence techniques can be mixed and matched to be used for attack or counter

To become highly skilled in Muay Thai requires constant training and drilling of the techniques, until they become second nature. The other elements which are important are cardio and strength, so training would include running and strength training.
